Grid-scale energy storage is becoming increasingly important for a low carbon energy infrastructure, both to manage fluctuating renewables and to increase efficiency across the country. The Energy Storage for Low Carbon Grids consortium, funded by EPSRC, pulls together the research efforts of leading universities from across the UK to address the immediate and long-term challenges in grid-scale energy storage.

This multidisciplinary, whole-systems led, consortium brings together internationally leading researchers with the expertise needed to comprehensively address the grand challenge. We bring together 12 academics across 9 UK academic institutions in the domains of electricity system economics, design and operation, advanced distribution network control and power electronics, energy storage systems, energy storage technologies, including sodium batteries, thermal storage, supercapacitors, flow batteries and cross-cutting materials, processing and manufacture.
